Alexandra Whitbeck

Alexandra Whitbeck is a community journalist based in Long Island and The Catskills in New York. She graduated from Hofstra University in December 2020 with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism. The following year in December 2021, she graduated with a Master’s degree in journalism from Hofstra University. During her time at Hofstra, Alexandra served as the Executive Director of 88.7FM WRHU’s Getting To The Root, a weekly, hour-long investigative journalism podcast highlighting community issues not seen on the nightly news. In this position, she conducted interviews, edited segments and produced the show to completion.

Alexandra reported on community issues for The Long Island Advocate and The Long Island Herald (Baldwin and Freeport) between 2019 and 2021. While working for both publications, Alexandra was awarded 2021 The Press Club of Long Island Media Award’s Robert W. Greene Public Service Award Small Market for a piece titled Children and the Opioid Epidemic. This piece also came in third for the Narrative: In-Depth Reporting category. Prior to this, she worked for The Pioneer, the local newspaper for Greene County, NY and The Columbia Paper, a weekly newspaper for Columbia County, NY. She has worked on many projects which are all housed here.

She is an avid plant lover and has over 100 plants in her home in Uniondale, New York, with her childhood friend and American Bully, Bentley.
